HAWC Bearings Provides Rapid Solution for North Sea Rig

Challenge

A main power system failure on a North Sea rig required replacement bearings, rendering the rig inoperable. The rig operator, under significant financial pressure to resume operations, sought a quick solution.

Solution

HAWC used its deep technical knowledge, machining capabilities and extensive supplier network to provide a rapid solution for its customer.

We manufactured the new stainless steel bearing assembly for the power system using Deva.Metal grade 161 (which the customer had in stock) and ASME SA240 SS 321 for the plates, and carbon steel for the sealing rings.

Results

HAWC was able to manufacture and deliver the new set of bearings for the North Sea rig in record time. The rig operator was able to install the new bearings and get the rig back up and running quickly. Consequently, they were very pleased with our ability to provide a timely and high-quality solution.

HAWC continues to demonstrate its ability to provide urgent solutions for complex bearing problems.

A bit about Deva 161…

Deva 161 is a high-performance bearing alloy that is known for its excellent wear resistance, high temperature resistance, corrosion resistance, and good dimensional stability. It is also non-magnetic, making it ideal for applications where magnetic fields are present.

In addition, ASME SA240 SS 321 is a type of stainless steel that is similar to type 304 stainless steel, but with a titanium addition of at least five times the carbon content. This titanium addition reduces or prevents carbide precipitation during welding and in the 800°-1500°F service conditions.
